About the project:
In_between_you_and_me started on 2003 when Marit Lindberg and Rachel Rosalen met for the first time in Japan. Both of them were very eager to find out as much as tehy could about the society around us from different perspectives. Sweden and Brazil are indeed very different countries and the connections of the art-life between the two countries has never been very strong, so during our attempts to understand Japan they had to start with finding out their respectively standing-points on a very basic level.
These specific situations made them get into some existential questions very quickly: What is it to be an artist? What is it to be a woman? What is it to be an artist and woman in and out of this country? They discussed art, love and family. They started to film their discussions and made long interviews with each other. They had also the same condition: to be foreigners without speaking Japanese. They were trying to understand something about japanese people and about themselves sharing this very strong experience that is to be immerse in a very radical otherness which is the Japanese culture.
Since they both left Japan they continued to collaborate by sending each other materials such as videos, photos, DVDs and texts and slowly developing a project about the complexity of foreignness concentrated on the process of traveling, working together, meeting and trying to look for these otherness.
In_between_you_and_me is also a place to meet, share and exchange ideas, concepts and artists experiences. A place to talk about what we call ‘in between’, these immaterial and connective spaces that design and build our cross-cultural relationships.
